Ulster Uneven Ages Juvenile Cross-country Championships.
Finn Valley emerge as top Ulster club.
Finn Valley completed the task of capturing the cup as top Ulster club
after day two of the AAI provincial under age cross country
championships.
The day was all the more enjoyable as they additionally hosted the
event in fine style. They now have 10 teams in the nationals.
Other clubs to perform well included Lagan Valley, St. Malachy's, St.
Michaels and Cranford.
Ian Ward completed an exciting day for the club with an emphatic
victory in the Under 19s getting away in the final third of the 6k
race.
Earlier the Under 11 Boys did the business shading it ahead of Monaghan
Phoenix; this is a strong squad led by Pauric Patton with Darragh
Bonner on his shoulder and strong support from Oisin Gallen, Gavin Mc
Laughlin, Shane Mc Bride and Peter Sweeney.
The Under 11 Girls just missed out, but Leanne Kelly and Denise Mc
Laughlin impressed, while Rebecca Ward when she headed for home had no
equal in the under 13 girls; Rebecca's team in second spot.
The under 13 boys disappointed in 4th spot and 15 lads in a similarly.
The Under 17 girls led out by Ailish Patton who really pushes the boat
out in training took the gold and interestingly the coach for this team
is Brendan Patton himself; Brendan was a national 1500m under age
medallist all those years ago.
The 19 girls team had little difficulty winning the team title; they
were led by Breda McGinty who probably hit the pace too early and was
overhauled by Michelle English; but Brenda is now back injury free and
further improvement will come and as with Shauna Guthrie, Maeve Culhane
and Fionnuala Bruton. All are enjoying training with Mark Connolly.
And so it ended with the abiding memory that race by Ian Ward leading a
quartet of Cathal O Connor, Ryan Mc Daid and Shane Bonner to silver
team behind St. Malachy's, Belfast.
Thanks are due Niall Mc Gonagle and his staff at the centre and to
Patsy Mc Ginley, Michael Kelly, Patsy Mc Gonagle, Ann Mc Gill, Noreen
Bonner, Conor Mc Gonagle, Eddie Mc Nulty, Eugene Drum, Bernie Alcorn,
Bridgeen Doherty, Kay Byrne, Catriona Mc Granaghan, Gerard Doherty,
Neil Martin and so many more that contributed to the success of the
event.
Finally the future looks good as in a fun event earlier in the day
Valley athletes Aoibhinn Mc Hugh, Amy Crossan, Denver Kelly and Ryan
Finn dominated.
