National medals for Valley in Nenagh
The AAI indoor underage championships in Nenagh were the focus for a small
number of Finn Valley athletes this weekend.
Pride of place went
to Blaithnaid Patton winning the gold in the high jump with a pb of
1-43m and narrowly missing out at an age group championship best of
1.46m. Her coach Sean Carlin considers that this young Dunwiley
athlete whose family have all been involved in athletics over recent
years has a 1.50m clearance in her so the challenge remains as the
season moves outdoors.
Paul Doherty has been involved in so many close
finishes and Sunday was yet another repeat again a camera decision; his
time 8-94 to winner 8-93 and he was raging which is exactly the
reaction you want if you do not win. A silver medal but he needs to
turn that decision around in the summer.
Breda Mc Ginty is back in
business once again with a silver medal (4-51) and delighted to get on the
podium. But really Breda has got to learn to bite the bullet mid-race
and stay in
contention and kick the living life out of it with 200m to go, as she
has a devastating finish which she must use to effect. She allowed a
30m gap to open here and that's not on. Everybody is delighted for her
after a long period of injury so next week it's 800m . Caoimhe Mc
Menamin was the only other athlete to impact with a pb 4-20m for 5th.
