National Road Relays Raheny Dublin

by Kieran Carlin.

Raheny Shamrocks senior men's team break course record. A 2 O'clock kick off on a glorious sunny day more a kind to a mid summers day, Finn Valley masters men kicked the day of for the North West athletes, in previous years this event has been dominated by the Valleys lads, as per usual this category is as competitive as the senior race, with the ever reliable Dominic Bonar Pat Hagerty and John Mc Glinchey battling in the Blue & White of Finn Valley they managed to finish in an excellent 5th position.

Next up the senior ladies, once again the experience of Kay Byrne lead the team off, Kay having a gallant run handing over to Teresa Mc Gloin in 9th position, Teresa having a great run in the 2mile leg, battling with the likes of Olympian Pauline Curly, and European U-23 bronze medallist Fionulla Brutton, Teresa eventually handing over to debutant Cliobhna Dunne in 11th place, Cliobhna battled through the race and maintained 11th position.

Also running in the colours of Rathfarnam was Catriona Jennings from Letterkenny now residing in Dublin Catriona having a fantastic run helping Rathfarnam team home in 4th position. The ladies race was won by Dundrum South Dublin.

The senior men would see a new course record of 37.33, the Raheny quartet leading from gun to tape an impressive run by all. James Flanagan back in training after a long break through injury got back into racing by running in the first 2mile leg, James will be delighted with his run, running 10.09 in this first run back. Letterkenny also fielding a team in the senior race, with a mix of youth, and the experience of Pauric Mc Kinney they crossed the line in 9th place.

A good day in many ways with a combination of the weather, talented athletes and to see as many people supporting on the side lines. We hope this will carries through to December when the European Athletic Cross Country comes to Dublin.

Up and coming events Next weekend the National 10km Road Championships in Navan and Irish Universities T&F will take place in Limerick. Also the 28th running of the Belfast city Marathon will be run on Monday 4th May. Good luck to all.
