Penrose and Kelly score at Ulster Schools.
Beautiful weather conditions added to what was a most enjoyable day at the Ulster schools athletic finals . Top of the Valley participation was John Kelly ,Royal and Prior a double winner in junior boys shot at 13-86m ahead of a lad from DRomore H S and 37-59m in the discus ahead of Surgeonon ,Ballyclare H S . IN the walks MIchael and Melanie Penrose students at Holy Cross, Strabane won their respective walks MIchael at 17-06-79 and MElanie at 8-18-65. Blaithnaid Patton was involved in a really competitive Junior girls high getting to 4th at 1-54m but cannot be too despondent .Finals in Tullamore on Saturday week . Flat out this week with local primary schools the finals on June 2nd @ 11am and of course the Ulster 9-13 champs at Shercock this Saturday 10am bus leaves 7am . The open competition held THursday was a success and the County board are to be complicated on this initiative .
Across in Moscow DEmpsey Mc Guigan was competing in European youth olymopics in the hammer and despite strong throws in the warm up over 60m the competition got to him a little with 2 no throws and a 55-91m but its a learning experience and now he simply needs to put the head down take this event and build on it towards nationals . THe big big story here was the victory of Mark English in the 1000m a serious performance at 2-24 which no doubt delighted team manager Bernie Alcorn . Congrats to Mark and all at Letterkenny a c on this victory a great boost for the sport locally and he is wished every best wish as he now prepares for world youth olympics in Singapore in August.
Well done to Ian Ward ,Sean mc Gettigan and Darren mc Glinchey team winners in recent inter -firms for LYIT
