Busy Weekend for Finn Valley AC
The Ulster Indoor Trials for the All-Ireland Indoor Championships were held in Antrim on Saturday. The first 4 individuals in each event plus the top three relay teams in each age group qualified for the National Championships in Nenagh to be held over two weekends in April. Finn Valley had a very successful day with 30 athletes qualifying for the 1st weekend 6th & 7th April and 27 athletes qualifying for the 2nd weekend 13th & 14th April.

Qualifiers for the first weekend are as follows:

U/13 Girls: Breda McGinty won the 600m in great style and also finished 3rd in the Long Jump. Laura Friel once again showing her ability at the High Jump finishing 2nd.

U/15 Girls: Nikki Alcorn won the 1000m Walk in a new p.b. of 5 minutes 19 secs., Laura Chambers back to winning ways with 1st place in the Shot Putt, Kylie Quinn 2nd in the High Jump and 3rd in 60m Hurdles and Frances Galbraith 4th in the Long Jump.

U/17 Girls: Ciara Masterson won the Shot Putt, Fiona McGinley, former All-Ireland Indoor High Jump Champion making a comeback winning the High jump with clubmates Gina McGowan and Sarah Byrne taking 2nd & 3rd places respectively. Sarah was unlucky not to qualify in the 1500m just missing out by one place.

U/13 Boys: Ryan McDaid recent double gold medallist in the Scottish Championships continued his winning ways taking 1st place in the 600m and High Jump and 3rd place in the 60m. Ian Ward also looked very impressive taking 2nd place in the 600m with clubmate Shane Bonner also qualifying in 4th position. Shane McCool was 3rd in the Long Jump.

U/15 Boys: Stefan Connolly was outstanding in the 800m storming to victory in a new personal best of 2 minutes 16 seconds. He was also 2nd in the 60m Hurdles. Unfortunately bad luck struck the following day and Stefan suffered a broken leg playing football. All at the club wish him a speedy recovery.

Paul McGrath won the 60m Hurdles and also took 3rd place in the High Jump. Packie Mailey competing for the first time for the club made it a clean sweep in the hurdles taking 3rd place. Brendan Culhane was 2nd in the Shot Putt as was Darren Kennedy in the 1000m Walk.

U/19 Boys: Barry McGill continues to show his good form taking 2nd place in the 1500m Walk.

U/12 Relay: 1st Place Lorcan McMenamin, Pauric McLaughlin, Christopher O'Leary and Karl Bradley.

U/16 Relay: Pauric Feely, Joe McGinley, Matthew Larkin, Peter McGowan & Seamus McMenamin

Qualifiers for the second weekend are as follows:

U/14 Girls: Fionnuala Bruton tackling the 1000m Walk for the first time was very impressive winning from clubmates Maeve Culhane 2nd place and Charlene Kelly 4th showing their hard training over the last month has paid off. Laura Reid was back in form after a poor cross-country season due to injury and looked very strong in the 800m finishing 2nd. Andrea McGowan was delighted with her 3rd place in the Shot putt with a new p.b. Paula Gallagher also qualified in the High Jump finishing 4th.

U/16 Girls: Catriona Penrose qualified in the 60m Hurdles.

U/12 Boys: Pauric McLaughlin had a brilliant run in the 600m winning easily. Gavin Carlin won the Long Jump and also finished 3rd in the 60m. Lorcan McMenamin had a busy and successful day qualifying in three events, 3rd in the Long jump, 3rd in the High jump and 4th in the 60m.

U/14 Boys: Kevin Gallagher had a very strong finish in the 800m and was rewarded with a p.b. of 2 minutes 36 seconds and 2nd place.

U/16 Boys: Pauric Feely continues his good form in the Long Jump taking 1st place with 5.20 metres and also qualified in the 60m in 2nd place. Joe McGinley was 3rd in the 60m and 3rd in the 200m. Matthew Larkin was 3rd in the 60m Hurdles and qualified in the 60m. Peter McGowan finished 4th in the 60m showing what a good squad of sprinters we have in this age group.

U/18 Boys: Kevin Feely was very impressive in the Shot Putt winning by 2 metres with a putt of 12.63m, Kevin also qualified in the 60m Hurdles.

U/13 Relay: 1st place ~ Shane Bonner, Ian Ward, Ryan McDaid and Paul Doherty were outstanding as were the U/12 boys relay team - in a different class from the opposition.

U/15 Relay: Maurice Boyle, Stefan Connolly, Patrick Mailey, Declan Hennessey & Enda Doherty.

Also competing well on the day but just failed to qualify were Jodie Stewart who won the U12 girls long jump with 3.35 metres but is too young to go forward to the All-Ireland Championships, Niamh Doherty who qualified for the final of the 60m and 5th in 600m, Michael Reid 5th in the Shot, Stephen Maxwell 5th in the 800m, Cialin McMenamin, Maurice Boyle 5th in the 800m winning his time trial easily, Brian Patton, Declan Hennessey finalist in the 60m, Enda Doherty 5th in the Long jump, Conor Fullerton 7th in the 800m, John Buchanan, Matthew Morris, Michael Penrose, Brian Doherty, Paul Doherty finallist in the 60m, Darren McGlinchey, Nikki Connolly, Geraldine Kelly, Grainne Nangle, Mary Connolly, Lindsey Stewart, Aine McLaughlin, Aishling Rushe, Terese Patton 5th in the Shot Putt, Emma O'Neill, Tara Martin, Aoife Whelan, Christine O'Neill, Clara Dunnion, Ailish Patton, Catherine Gallagher 5th in the 600m, Sharon McGlynn, Siobhan Gallagher, Laura McNeill, Mairead McGill, Donna McBride, Paula Friel, Claire Dunnion, Caitriona Martin, Ciara Hegarty, Tara Hegarty, Laura McGinley, Ciara Gallen finalist in the 60m, Denise Beirne 5th in the 600m.

A special word of thanks to Cranford A.C., Letterkenny A.C. and Inishowen A.C. who came to our assistance when one of our coaches broke down and helped get our athletes home after a very long day.

Sportshall:

Congratulations to Grainne Nangle who was on the Donegal U/15 Girls team that qualified for the British Sportshall Finals in Birmingham. Grainne was on the winning relay team. Other medallists at the Ulster Sportshall Finals were Ryan McDaid, 2nd High Jump, Pauric Feely 1st Long jump, and Joe McGinley 3rd 2-lap race.

Northern Ireland Veteran Cross-Country Championships:

Dominic Bonner was 1st in the Northern Ireland Vets. Championships on Saturday and with Clubmate Mark Connolly in 3rd place, Pat McElroy 11th and Bernard McCabe 25th also insured they won the team title.

Also during the week Seamus Kerr part of our National Vets Champions team won the Armagh Road Race Vet Section.

Short Course Cross-Country Championships:

The Short Course Championships over 4k will be held in Alsaa on Sunday next with Finn Valley fielding teams in both men's and women's Championships and will be expecting to win the womens and medal in the men's races. These races will also serve as trials for selection on the Irish Team for the World Cross-Country Championships.

Richard Simms and his girlfriend Marion Steininger who manage a lot of the world's top class Kenyan athletes have had 21 of their athletes chosen for the Kenyan Teams for the World Cross Country Championships.

Donegal Person of the Year:

Congratulations to Patsy McGonagle, Club Chairman, who was presented with his award as Donegal Person of the Year 2001 on Friday night in the Burlington Hotel. Their was a capacity crowd of 600 in attendance, the largest ever, a true assessment of the popular choice. A great night was had by all and Patsy wishes to express his gratitude to all those who travelled to support him.

Club Coaches:

The new club tracksuit tops have now arrived and will all club coaches who have not yet picked up their complimentary tracksuit please collect same at the centre.
