Ulster Schools Track and Field Championships Results

The Ulster Schools Track and Field Championships were held on Friday and Saturday last at the Antrim Forum.

On Friday night club athletes representing their various schools were very successful. Aoife Whelan had a very clear victory in the Junior 1200m Walk with clubmate Clara Dunnion in 3rd place. Fionnuala Bruton also had an easy victory in the Intermediate walk. Laura Feely was 2nd in the Junior girls Hammer and Alan Cavanagh was 2nd in the Senior Boys 3000m. Clive Heapes was 4th in the Hammer and Shauna Guthrie was 5th in the Intermediate 3000m.

On Saturday more success was to follow with Aileen Brennan having a great competition winning the Junior girls High Jump with a new p.b. of 1.54m. Breda McGinty put in a very impressive performance winning the Intermediate 1500m in 4.55.1 unchallenged from gun to tape. Michael Reid was 2nd in the Senior Boys discus with a very good 33.58m throw. Karen Ferguson was 2nd in the minor girls 800m with a new p.b. of 2.34.8. Laura Friel continues her good form this season with 3rd place in the Intermediate girls high Jump with 1.58m.

Stewart McClean had an excellent run in the Senior Boys 400m with a new p.b. of 51.7 finishing 3rd. Paul Doherty also had an excellent run in the Intermediate 100m hurdles finishing 3rd. Enda Doherty put in a great sprint finish in the Intermediate 1500m and was rewarded with 3rd place. Jodie Stewart hurdled well in the Junior Girls 75m Hurdles finishing 5th in the final. Geraldine Kelly also finished 5th in the Senior Girls Triple Jump with a 9.81m jump. Gavin McCrudden still battling injury competed in the Intermediate Boys javelin but was well below his best.

Championships ahead

The Donegal Track and Field Championships will be held in Letterkenny this weekend and the Primary Schools Track and Field will be held at the Finn Valley Centre on Wednesday, 1st June with the Irish Schools Finals on the 4th June in Tullamore and Ulster U9- U13 on the 5th June at Finn Valley busy times ahead.
