Finn Valley 5K

Finn Valley Athletic Club hosted a 5K road race as part of the Grand Prix Series last Friday with many Finn Valley athletes to the fore. Ian Ward won the Junior Men’s race in an excellent time of 16.33 with Enda Doherty also running very well in 2nd place in 16.48 and Darren McGlinchey in 3rd place in 17.25.Brian Patton also put in a very good run placing 5th in the Junior Mens race in 18.32. Noeleen Porter won the Senior Womens race in 17.48 with clubmates Teresa McGloin 2nd in 20.17 and Charlene McGowan 3rd in 22.37. Pat Hegarty was 3rd in the Master Men 0-40 category in 16.56. Pat McCrudden was 5th in the 0-50 Master Men and Jim Hynes won the Master Men 0-60. In the Master Women 0-45 we had another one, two, three with Noreen Bonner taking 1st place, Mary Martin 2nd and Noreen McGonagle 3rd. Grainne McGowan was 5th in the Master Women 0-35 and Michael Penrose was 10th in the Senior Men’s section.

Brendan Alexander

Brendan Alexander journeyed to Belfast to compete in the pole vault at the Golden Cow League but unfortunately was unable to get a competition due to lack of officials but he did not have a wasted journey as he competed in the 400m and recorded a new p.b.

National Juvenile U14 – U19 Track and Field Championships

The National Championships for our juvenile athletes ages U14 to U19 will take place in Tullamore this Saturday and Sunday. We have 45 athletes who have qualified through the Ulster Championships and we wish them the best of luck at the weekend. The younger athletes U9 to U13 will compete in their National Games and Championships the following weekend in Sligo.

International Duty

Congratulations and good luck to club coaches Bernie Alcorn and Neil Martin who have been selected for International Duty next week. Bernie has been selected as Irish Team Coach and Manager for the World Youth Championships in Marrakesh, Morocco whilst Neil has been selected as Irish Team Manager for the European Junior and U23 Championships in Erfurt, Germany. The club wishes both teams the very best of luck.
