Busy weekend for Valley AthletesA busy weekend beckons for Valley athletes young and old with the Ulster 10-18 championships at Ballyclare. They leave on Saturday at 8.30 a.m. for a noon start while the Donegal senior cross-country event is at Finn Valley with a noon start on Sunday. Valley have completely dominated this event over the last 25 years providing the vast bulk of individual and team winners. In 2005 at the same venue the club's women once again were to the fore while the visiting Letterkenny men had an unusual but well deserved team and individual victory. With the leadership of national marathon champion Gary Crossan on Sunday Letterkenny will no doubt expect to build on their 2004 record. Local pride will be at stake and it's hard to see anything less than a successful defence of the title by Letterkenny as it has emerged that Jamie Lewis is now not available due to business abroad. Hopefully a large group of supporters from all the local clubs will create a positive atmosphere. Dublin City MarathonJamie Lewis unfortunately dropped out at 17 miles in the Dublin City Marathon, an event in which the Irwin family from Stranorlar attracted national media attention as 12 family members participated in memory of their late father and club president Francie, a regular competitor in the early days. Finally congratulations to Gary Crossan on winning the national marathon for the fourth time, a tremendous achievement. MembershipsClub membership returns are now almost complete. A timely reminder to the small number still outstanding to get returns into Grainne McGowan as soon as possible.
RetirementPeader McGranaghan retired as club centre manager after 13 dedicated years service just last week. The current staff members made him a presentation which he duly gratefully acknowledged. The committee, senior athletes and parents will attend a function on November l2th to acknowledge his service.
Joe ByrneJoe Byrne expressed dissappointment with his 3rd place finish over the weekend in the N.C.A.A. Conference Championships, the Illiniois University student now races regionals on Saturday week where he needs to make the top 10 to qualify forthe U.S. Collegiate Nationals. He returns to Ireland on December 16th, and will race the Valley 5K on Boxing Day.Newsletters by Niall McGonagle, Club P.R.O. |
