Odyssey Journey Productive as Valley Qualify in Large Numbers for Nationals

Finn Valley athletes, many of whom had just stepped off the plane from Portugal less than 48 hours previously, were on the road to Belfast to the Odyssey Arena for Ulster indoor athletics Saturday/Sunday last. The target was to qualify for the nationals next month and late on Sunday some 17 had just done that.

Top of the list was Shane Bonner. He is an exciting talent in the walk event which could see him chasing an Irish schools title later in the season indeed it was a similar story with Paul Doherty winning the 60m. hurdles. Both of these lads can impact at their event in a meaningful way in the next few months.

On the gold trail as well was Laura Feely and Laura Friel who had a season's best at 1.55 m. but life really only begins at 1.60m. Aoife Whelan, Shauna Guthrie from Drumkeen, Madeline Penrose who needs to approach her walk in a more aggressive manner to gain medals at the nationals.

Silver for Ciara McGarvey, Ciaran Brennan who had a busy week as he contributed to Donegal Sportshall success as did Nicole O'Leary.

Aaron McMenamin at 1.45 in high, Breda McGinty 2.22 odd in 800m let the girl who beat her take the inside track hopefully she can learn that nobody takes your space and Ian Ward who will concentrate in the relay 4X 200 for indoors before chasing success individually outdoors, Karen Ferguson in 800m. so determined.

Bronze for Jodie Stewart who should really feel dissappointed as should Matthew Kelly.

All the athletes remained to watch some exciting senior athletics later in the day and will be enthused by that.

The club trip to Portugal was a tremendous success, a learning experience with 34 travelling.

The club appreciate the contribution of leaders/coaches Maureen Doherty, Christine Feely, Patsy McGonagle and Sean Carlin.

At the Odessey on Sunday 4 club members were assimilated at coaching level, 3 with certificates being presented to Bernie Alcorn, Stephen Maguire, Patsy McGonagle and Richard Simms.

This weekend the club host the Ulster indoor championships beginning 12 noon and all help would be appreciated.

The new re-furbished club centre will be officially opened on Friday March 3rd at 7.30 with all club members and friends asked to come early.
