The state of Donegal Athletics 1960s and early 1970s. |
The full contents of the article.County Donegal Athletics Board was founded in 1969 following meetings in Cranford and Letterkenny. The first officers were: Chairman: Mr. P.J. Carlin, Raphoe; Secretary: Mr. Patrick McGonagle, Ballybofey; Treasurer: Mr. B. O'Donnell, Lifford; Registrar: Mr. Eamon Giles, Cranford. The amazing success of athletics in the county can be said to have started in the early 1960s with the formation of the Don Bosco Club in Donegal Town. That club went out of existence after a few years because of lack of interest and support, but it did help to blaze the trail. Then a few athletes in the Cranford area formed the Cranford A.C. and this club has proved the cornerstone of the sport's tremendous development in Donegal. In a matter of years, the Cranford athletes were known all over Ireland, and they also quickly made their presence felt in international competition. During 1966-7 Donegal won the Ulster novice, junior and senior inter-county championships. On those teams were Michael McHugh, Bill Hunter, Pat Marley, all of Cranford; P. Marley (Milford), D. McDaid, N. McDaid, of Glenswilly; P.J. Carlin (Raphoe) and J. Walshe (Dungloe). |
