National Senior Bronze for Charlie GallagherCongratulations to Charlie Gallagher who continues his comeback this season with a terrific performance in the National Senior Championships last weekend. Charlie won the Bronze medal in the 3000m Steeplechase in a time of 9.26.80 behind winner Eugene O'Neill, Crusaders (9.06.68), and Gareth Coughlan, UCD (9.15.24) with Letterkenny A.C. man, Ciaran Doherty, in 4th place in a time of 9.42.64. Its great to see Charlie back competing in the steeplechase -- an event in which he had represented Ireland internationally before serious injuries held back his athletic career. Hopefully this great performance will encourage Charlie to get back to his best once again.
OlympicsPatsy McGonagle will be heading to Limasol in Cyprus on the 10th August with the Irish Olympic Team. The team will be based there pre-Olympics for training and aclimatisation before heading to Athens. We wish Patsy and all the Irish team the very best of luck.
Derby InternationalKieran McConnell who was selected to compete in the Discus for the Celtic Games last week has also been confirmed for the Derby International on the 8th August -- many congratulations to Kieran and we wish him luck also.
DenmarkAt the time of going to press we have athletes competing in Denmark in the World Masters Championships. Dominic Bonner has qualified for the final of the 1500m and we await results from that and from Anne McGill and James Gibbons who will be competing in the walks. Mark Connolly competed well in the 1500m but failed to qualify for the final.
CoachingClub coaches Brid McMenamin, Chistine Feely, Bernie Alcorn and Sean Carlin are attending a track and field coaching course at the Alexander stadium in Birmingham this week.
SympathyDeepest sympathy to Brendan Patton and his family on the sudden death of Brendan's father Francie. Francie was a very well respected man who was well known for his amazing fitness walking many, many miles every day right up to recent times. Brendan and his brother Conor were athletes in the club in their younger days and now Brendan is coaching at the club and three of his children Brian, Eilish and Blathnaid are all successful athletes. Francie had just celebrated his 97th birthday before his sudden death. May he rest in peace. Bernie Alcorn, P.R.O. |
