1979; An International Year

Danny   reached the pinnacle of his career with a magnificent 11th place in the World Cross-Country Championships in Limerick with John Treacy winning the event for the second year in succession and good runs from Gerry Deegan, 43rd Mick O’ Shea, 46th Donie Walsh 47th Tony Brien 50th ensured that Ireland would take the silver medals. England won the event and the Soviet Union were third. Danny’s 11th place equalled that of Paddy Haughey who finished 11th in the International Cross-Country Championships in 1946. Danny also competed in the Europa Cup in both Luxembourg and Geneva in the 10,000m.

A week previously, on St Patrick’s Day, Danny had won a silver team medal in the long cross event at the CISM (World Military Championships) in Fermoy. Brian Keeney was a member of the short cross team at Fermoy. Many of the athletes who were selected for the World Championships were also eligible to compete in the   CISM championships in Fermoy making it as always in this event an extremely strong field.

Bernie O’ Callaghan was the other Donegal connection to the World Cross- Country and the CISM Championships, in Fermoy he was a Chairman of the results team, and in Limerick he was also a member of the results team for the World Cross-Country.

Danny, Bernie and Hugo were selected for the international with Scotland and Holland in Belfield at 10,000m, 3,000m walk and Long Jump respectively, this was the largest representation that Donegal had ever had on any international track and field team up to this.

Margaret Gallen Finn Valley was a member of the Northern Ireland women’s Cross-Country team at the World championships in Limerick.  Camilla Harron had a truly magnificent run to finish second of the five hundred competitors in the English inter-counties cross- country championships.

NATIONAL SENIOR CHAMPIONSHIPS

On the track Bernie O’ Callaghan, became the ninth Donegal athlete to win an Irish individual title when he won his first national title with a gun to tape victory in the 3,000m walk at the National Senior Championships in Belfield The other Donegal National individual title winners are Andy Colhoun, Rosbracken, John Mc Gettigan, Lifford, Paddy Haughey, Teelin, Paul Dolan Ballyshannon, John Gallagher, Cruit Island, Cyril O’ Boyle, Glenswilly, Hugo Duggan, Milford, Danny Mc Daid Glenswilly.

Olympia in the Derry People wrote “Donegal must surely be the Tír Na nÓg of this world, if one is to judge by the results of the National Track and Field Championships at the weekend. Bernie O’ Callaghan, wins the National 3,000m walk, Danny Mc Daid, takes silver in the 10,000m while Hugo Duggan collected a bronze in the Long Jump. All these athletes will never see thirty five years again, and one wonders what has gone wrong in the County as not once in the last decade has any other athlete come along who can consistently be in amongst the best at senior level for a period of three to four years.”
