Donegal Athletics 1974

A first sign of a return to normality was the publication of a fixture list by Athletics Ireland during the week and we can only pray that all the events take place. This is particularly important for athletes under 13 who have been denied competition for almost two years now having missed out on indoor Championships last year and this and the only outdoor events they had were the Donegal County Championships last year. The list of Ulster and AAI fixtures is included later in this article.

In 1974 Donegal athletes continued to make their presence felt at national level, particularly in the road and field events, Danny Mc Daid won his second BLE Senior Marathon Championship and was selected for the Marathon in the European Track and Field Championships in Rome. Hugo Duggan won the National Long Jump, Neil Sweeney,  a native of Dungloe competing for UCD, was third in the National senior Triple Jump and Paddy Marley and Danny Mc Daid were both part of the Clonliffe team that won bronze medals  in the National Road relays

In the Ulster Senior Cross-Country Championships Cranford retained their senior men’s title from Glaslough, with Finn Valley in third. In the woman’s race Finn Valley won their first Ulster senior crown with Glaslough in second and Killybegs in third.

In March Dr John O’ Donavan, Department of Physiology UCG was invited by the County Board to conduct Physiology Tests on the County senior athletes. Over a number of weeks he attended the Letterkenny Institute of Technology and carried out the tests. I believe that no other county in the country was thinking in terms of physiological testing for their athletes at that time.

BLE and the NIAAA announced a number of Unity Races in 1974 hopes were high that at long last the athletic split which had haunted Irish Athletics for almost forty years would soon be healed. The races would see, Ulster Sports Council, BLE and IAAF athletes compete against each other, with two races being hosted by each organisation. The first race was scheduled to take place in Ballyclare on January 6th in the Miskimmon Cup 6 mile cross-country race. The Quinlan Cup Road Races in Tullamore, hosted by BLE and Tullamore Harriers Athletic Club on January 21st was the second event and the third event, hosted by The Ulster Sports Council and Strabane Athletic Club was J. B. Logue 10 mile road race on February 10th.

A new policy document was issued by BLE to all affiliated clubs among the more striking proposals was one which proposed “that County Boards be abolished and that the country be divided into a number of regions with Ulster constituting a single region.” The proposal envisaged that Leinster, Munster and Connaught be divided into three or four regions while Ulster would be seen as a single unit.

At the February meeting of the County Board in Jackson’s Hotel, Ballybofey a there was a lengthy discussion on financing the county teams taking part in inter-county events. The discussion arose as result of the failure of a number of athletes to travel to the inter-counties cross-country in Mallow. Patsy Mc Gonagle and Eamon Harvey both stated that it was ridiculous that athletes from Donegal should be expected to travel to Mallow and be back to go to work on Monday.

Ben O’ Donnell said that Donegal clubs had no one to blame but themselves and stated that if Donegal clubs did not apply to host BLE championships they could not blame anyone else. He added that Donegal athletes must attend congress and other meetings and voice their opinions or else they will never get anywhere.

John Carlin said that in his opinion there was too much being spent on juvenile athletics and too few of them would ever last out to become senior athletes, he said that must concentrate more on senior athletics, and that, in his opinion, the County Board is letting the senior athletes down.

The following committee were elected at the County Board AGM

English, Letterkenny, Secretary Michael Mc Gill, Lifford, Asst Sec Eamon Harvey, St John Bosco, Treasurer Rosaleen Mc Gonagle, Finn Valley, PRO Patsy Mc Gonagle, Finn Valley, Registrar Ben O’ Donnell, Lifford, Male Athlete Of The Year Danny Mc Daid, Cranford, Female Athlete of the Year Regina Gibson and Bernadette English both Letterkenny, Personality Award John Wilson, St Johnston.

FIRST ANNUAL COUNTY TIRCONAILL ATHLETIC SPORTS, LETTERKENNY 28 AUGUST 1921

A friend of mine Joe Mc Colgan from Strabane, now based in England, sent me an interesting poster from 100 years ago it is for the first Donegal Athletics Championships under GAA rules which took place in Letterkenny on 28th August 1921. While this was billed as the first Annual Tirconaill sports it was also the last for 49 years until the County Senior Championships were held in Killybegs in 1970.

In 1921 there were two athletic associations in Ireland, both of which organized National Championships, the Gaelic Athletic Association and the Irish Amateur Athletic Association. The two associations merged in 1922 to form the National Athletic and Cycling Association.

But back to the Tirconaill Athletics Sports held in the Asylum Field (now St Conal’s Hospital) in Letterkenny, the programme was long and varied and included sprints, middle distance, jumps, throws, poc fada  and tug o war, interestingly there was a 600m hurdles event listed on the programme.  All events were open handicap events except for the two  Tirconaill Championships the 100 yards and the 880 yards but no event for women. Entry was one shilling per event with multiple entries costing two shillings. The entry Fee for boys was sixpence and it also cost one shilling to enter the ground. It was reported in the Derry Journal the following week that the takings was over £70 and this equates to about 1,400 spectators.

Five athletes competed in the 100m and Manus O’ Flaherty, from Clady was the champion and John Strain from Milford won the silver medal.

Four athletes competed in the 880 yards championship and the winner was John Coyle, Ramelton with T. J. Mc Geehan from Derry in second.
