February 15 2020 - Gold for James Kelly the highlight at Irish Universities Championships

The Finn Valley AC man threw a best of 14.89 metres.

The St Johnston native follows in the footsteps of his older brother John, also a gold medal winner at these Championships in the past.

Kelly saw off Padraig Hore (UCC) and James O’Neill (DCU) to take the top spot.

Tir Chonaill AC’s Kelly McGrory, competing for DCU, won a silver and a bronze. McGrory took silver alongside Aoife Lynch, Alanna Ryan and Sophie Becker in the women’s 4x200m final. DCU were beaten to the gold by NUIG.

McGrory won bronze in the women’s 400m final. Finishing in 56.17 seconds, McGrory was just behind college mate Becker and Nicole Walsh (NUIG).

There was bronze for Finn Valley AC’s Bridget McDyer in the women’s shot putt final. McDyer, a student at NUIG, reached out to 9.74 metres to take third spot behind Michaela Walsh (DCU) and Lystus Ebosele (UCD). McDyer was also fourth in the 8kgs weight for distance final.

Lifford-Strabane AC’s Gareth Crawford took bronze in the men’s long jump final with a best of 6.82 metres. The Ulster University student was behind Keith Marks (DCU) and David Cussen (UCD).

Finn Valley woman Janine Boyle (UU) had two fifth-placed finishes, in the 60m and 200m finals.
