Finn Valley Centre Community Hero Evening

The Finn Valley Centre and Athletic Club have been at the heart of community in the Twin Towns and surrounding Finn Valley area for many years.  In recent times the centre has developed a website which promotes the work of the organisation and provides support to community groups by promoting their events and work in the community.  It is with this community ethos in mind that the centre embarked on the Community Hero project which culminated in a reception for the original twelve nominees.  This project highlighted the work done by individuals who contributed to their respective groups by volunteering and fundraising etc.  The Community Hero project was established to promote the work of all community groups in the area through highlighting the work of a nominated member, and also to acknowledge the tremendous effort that they, as individuals have given.

This is the second year of the awards and over the past 12 months a Community Hero has been selected each month representing a range of different groups who have all added positively to life in the general Finn Valley region.  There was a packed house at the Finn Valley Centre on Friday 5th May where a total of 16 people representing the past 12 months were presented with a certificate to honour their contribution to the community.  Certificates were awarded by Patsy McGonagle who spoke of his own inspiration to found the Finn Valley Athletics Club. The evening began with an opening address by Monica Ramsey, organiser of the event who told a personal story demonstrating how important people like the heroes being honoured are, and of the impact they can have in people’s lives. This was reiterated by Fr Kieran McAteer PP Stranorlar who was delighted to see such an event taking place in the community and recognition of the great work that many people do.  It was a great community occasion and those in attendance were able to mingle while enjoying refreshments after the event.
