National Road Relay Success

A large enthusiastic group returned to Raheny once again to contest all elements of the national relays in tandem with an ethos within club that the real litmus test for serious athletes regardless of standard is being involved in national championship athletics wherever possible. Early results  were positive as the master women had an impressive victory with Teresa Doherty posting a really solid 2 mile performance having taken the baton from Catriona Devine with Marie Harper sealing the victory ahead of Newbridge . . This was in the 0 35 section and a team of Kay Byrne Noreen Martin and Mary Hippsley got up for the silver medals in the 0 50 behind the host club Raheny . The master men were in the medal battle for a bit but had to settle for 6th with Donore securing the team victory here . Another aspect of the mens senior challenge was the youthful nature of same with a few of the younger lads making their senior debut again positive integrating them into the scene at this level .

Elsewhere John Mc Enhill won a local 5k at Gleneely N S

In London marathon Vivian Cheryuitot Kenya won the womens in a time of 2.18 . A former winner of the Valley Stephens Day 5k she is coached and managed by Ricky Simms and previously under hisguidance has won world and Olympic 10k track titles a unique achievement by an Irish coach  something that dosent ever seem to have been acknowledged by coaching fraternity at Athletics Ireland particularly when one considers he received his early coaching qualifications here in Ireland .

Congrats to Aoife Mc Grath Castlederg, included on a NI squad for European mountain running champs in July . Aoife a member of Valley since her early primary school days now attends secondary school in Omagh and is a constant presence at club training accompanied by her Mum Mairead .

Looking ahead all focus is now on the Finn Valley schools programme in May and the Little Athletics meeting May 18th also at FVAC plus Irish Schools .
